Black Stars captain, Andre Dede Ayew says, the national team must fight to earn back Ghana’s support.

The Black Stars has lost touch with the Ghanaian fan base after the 2014 World Cup debacle in Brazil.

The Black Stars has also gone 39 years without an AFCON trophy with the last coming in Libya in 1982.

Ghana has appeared in the semi-finals four times in the last five editions of the Africa Cup of Nations but missed out on the trophy in all four appearances.

Ghana made the finals of the continental showpiece in the 2010 and the 2015 editions but lost to Egypt and Ivory Coast respectively.

The four-time AFCON holders have already booked a place in the 2021 AFCON to be staged in Cameroon next year.

Andre Ayew believes that the love for the national team will return if they begin to churn out good results.

“If we want to do something we will need it [the support of the nation] but we can’t sit here and tell them that they have to believe that we are going to win or they should bet that we are going to win.

“But that feeling that they are behind us, that is something that is also something that we have to earn.

“I think we have started the right way by qualifying for the Africa Cup.

“By the time we get to January, we are going to Cameroon, the belief and the spirit and everything around will be higher than what it is and we can go there and really deliver for the nation.” Dede Ayew told Joy FM.

The Black Stars confirmed their 2021 AFCON qualification after a 1-1 draw against South Africa at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg.

The stars made light work of São Tomé with a 3-1 scoreline to top Group C with 13 points.

Ghana has the AFCON four times in 1963, 1965, 1972 and the last being the 1982 edition.
